In 2004 I reverted to Islam, while working in the Australian Fashion Industry. I soon released, I could only buy maxi length clothing during winter, this was problematic for the hot Australian summer. Not only was the fabric the wrong composition for the season, the designs didn’t visually or aesthetically work for the Australia workplace. I needed clothes that were long, cool and fashionable. I did my research and realised a global market was completely being missed. Muslims living in the west, resorted to multi layering pieces, buying up long sleeve items in winter, which did not work well in the hot Australian summers or were imported from overseas and did not follow western fashion trends. So in 2006 I set out to start a fashion label that had longer lengths, cool fabrics but on trend with current global fashion trends.
In 2008, I launch Baraka a Modest Fashion label made in Sydney Australia, clothing that fused longer lengths with catwalk trends. Cool, comfortable and fashionable the label was the first in the world to fuse hijab with fashion and be source of inspiration for other modest fashion labels to begin building the Modest Fashion Industry. Baraka layed the foundation for a new modest fashion market where faith and fashion were front and centre to fashion design. This created a global market with a estimated net worth of $322 billion dollars annually and saw designer like Dolce and Gabbana, Net a Porter and H&M create Eid Collections for this specific target market. My work has been feature at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney Australia, Vogue Magazine and Australian Fashion Week in 2012.
Pre-Instagram my work appears only in books, blogs and in the memories of my customers. In recent years I have seen the need for innovation and modest fashion design to further evolve through education and mentoring, creating fashion that put sustainability, fabric technology and patternmaking and garment construction at the forefront of Sustainable Global Fashion Design. In the future I hope create another Modest Fashion label while supporting the next generation of Fashion Designers to create change through fashion and design.
